Miracle Hair Moisturizer!

As I mentioned in another coconut hair treatment post in the past, coconut oil is a great oil that actually moisturizes and penetrates to the hair cuticle. Not all oils penetrate down to the hair cuticle. They just sit and protect the outside.

Well, I bought the coconut oil a few weeks ago and I have been using it once a week since then. I went to a health food store and bought a big jar of it in the cooking aisle. I first went to the skincare aisle to look at the oils there and all I saw was this one brand that had one bottle of coconut oil. And their coconut oil was in this little clear 4oz. Bottle, which was like $8 to $10! Ha! No way! I knew that you can get the same coconut oil in a huge jar in the cooking aisle. So I went to the cooking aisle and sure enough there were about 4 to 5 different brands of huge bottles of coconut oil! I picked a big black plastic jar of coconut oil that was 16oz! And it was only $8! I knew it would last a long time too!

The brand of coconut oil I am using is Jarrow Formulas, it is also expeller pressed, which is suppose to better for you. The Jarrow Formulas coconut oil is in a hard form. I looked for the coconut oil that was already liquefied, but this one was the best deal for its’ money so I bought it! Melting the top of it has been super easy too! I just plug up my sink and feel it up halfway with hot water. Then I sit my jar of coconut oil in the water, which only comes halfway up the jar. I let the jar sit in the water for about 15 seconds and you can see the top of the coconut oil turn to liquid. I rub my fingertips all over the top and spread the coconut oil down the length of my dry hair. I rub enough of the coconut oil on it so that my hair looks wet then I swirl my hair up into a bun and wait an half an hour or more. I pop into the shower wash up and I have been using my deep conditioner after I shampoo too.

My hair has been so soft! I am liking it! I have not tried it with out any conditioner, but coconut oil is a excellent substitute for a deep conditioner! I just cannot believe that idea yet. It is going to take me awhile to try it. I guess when I run out of my deep conditioner I will just try the coconut oil and see how my hair feels then. It is so awesome! This coconut hair treatment is such a great deal for something that works!

I would like to feel your hair are you sure it rinses out completely? Does it hurt the drain like oil from cooking or do you use a tiny tiny amount?

Well, do not put the coconut oil on the top of your head, only the length of your hair. You can also rinse your hair in the shower and then take your bath so the oil does not accumulate in the bath water staying in your hair. Many bath oils and hot oil treatment are used on the hair and they do not cause problems for the drain, so a little coconut oil should not cause problems for the drain any more than any other oils. Also only do the coconut oil treatment once a week, it is a deep moisture treatment.

Hi. I’m desperately interested in trying this on my daughter and myself. I wanted to know, can you use a shampoo first to cleanse the hair before applying this conditioner? Otherwise, you’d be deep conditioning “dirty” hair. Also, what are the benefits to applying to dray hair versus wet hair?

Would you recommend using this as a daily moisturizer? My daughter has fine (soft/thin) hair that often times becomes dry by the end of the day. Even after applying a hair lotion in the morning.

Apply coconut oil as a conditioning treatment on dry hair not wet hair. Yes, on dirty dry hair, as a pre-shampoo treatment. That way the oil will not completely wash away, but moisturize your hair better.

However, you can apply a tiny bit of coconut oil to your wet hair after your shower as a leave-in treatment. It works just as good if not better than all of the silicone creams.

You can use it on your little girl’s hair everyday or once a week. It all depends on your little girl’s hair. It may not rinse out in just one shampoo. That is why I use it once a week on a day I am not going anywhere, because it can make my hair greasy. But it may wash out of your little girl’s hair just fine. Try it and see!

You could also try using a baby shampoo or something that does not have too many silicones or sulfates on your little girl’s hair. Baby shampoo is really gentle and works for my fine/thin hair that has dry ends too!

Conditioner only washing is also an option. Check out my other post about washing with only conditioners. I love it!

Thanks Ally for responding so quickly. I actually tried it on my daughter’s (African American) hair last night and I was impressed at how well it conditioned and moistened her hair, but after having washed it out and letting it air dry (as my daughter is only 23 months)by the time she awoke this mnorning, it was as dry as a wool. So I ended up still having to put in her regular lotion moisturizer (non-organic) this morning to do her hair. My guess is that the cotton sheets absorbed the excess oil from her hair.

I noticed you said that I could use it daily but you’re right, it is extremely oily, but I may have to do that and somehow soak up the excess oil w/ a towel before she goes off to school, as I don’t want her clothes or anything at the school messed up from where she lays/places her head. I am also interested in using coconut oil on her skin for eczema, but Iused it in the liquid form and it kind ran down her leg like SSS (Avon’s Skin So Soft) until I rubbed it in. Do you know if it is more effective by applying it in solid form?

I’m glad I hvae you to chat with about this.

You could also try using the coconut oil as a deep over night treatment once in awhile. Put it on her dry hair and a towel over her pillow. Coconut does wash out of sheets and towels easier than other carrier oils. Then wash it out in the morning.

You could keep trying the coconut oil on your daughter’s hair for a while to see if it works. It usually takes a few weeks to tell if a product works.

As for applying coconut oil in a liquid form or solid is really up to you. They are both effective. Scoop some up in solid form and rub it in between your hands to soften it and then apply it to your daughter’s skin. Solid form will be less messy and easier to control.

I hope the coconut oil works for your daughter’s skin and hair!
