New Neutrogena Sunscreens

So I was at Wal-Mart today and they had all of the sunscreens out in the main aisle. That means it is sunscreen time. Spring time and summer vacations are just around the corner. Fun time playing in the warm sun is coming.

There were a lot of new Neutrogena sunscreens with incredibly high UVB (SPF) and UVA numbers! There was a new sport one that looked really cool, that I bet would be great for oily skin people for everyday wear. They also had a new Age Shield facial sunblock with SPF 90! Wow!

The U.S. sunscreens have really caught up for European’s sunscreens. Almost all the sunscreens out there are stable. I did not pick up any of these new Neutrogena sunscreens, even though they were tempting. I am still testing out my Coppertone Nutra Shield Dual Defense sunscreen as mentioned in a previous post. Will update about it soon…

A Reason to Wear SPF 30 and Not SPF 15

On cosmeticsdesign.com a new test in Europe was done on sunscreens and whether or not their SPF 15 claim is legit. 11 out of 14 sunscreens had an SPF of 12.5 or above. Some only had an protection of 7.1 about half of the sunscreen bottle’s claim of SPF 15! Some of these sunscreen bottles were from some supermarket brands and big brands such as L’Oreal and Nivea!

Europe’s sunscreen generally protects better than American’s sunscreens too! More FDA checks need to be performed. Read the active ingredient labels to be safe too. America also needs to catch up more with Europe on our UVA protection. Fortunately this is happening more and more. It is just odd that it has taken so much longer, American Dermatologists did not start worrying about UVA rays until the 1990s.

On ewg.com it was stated, “If used properly, sunscreen rated SPF15 will protect you against 93 per cent of UVB rays. SPF 60 will protect you against about 98 per cent of UVB rays.”

So buy sunscreen that is SPF 30 and then you will know that you are at least getting an SPF 15!

Don’t forget to put on 1/4 teaspoon for the face and a shot glass for the body!

SPF Moisturizers and SPF15 vs. SPF 30

Since my last post on sunscreen in makeup. I thought I would talk about layering sunscreens.

You can’t layer a sunscreens to increase the protection.

Just a reminder you have to be careful when layering under and over sunscreen. Avobenzone can be destabilized with octiNoxate. So check your makeup and your moisturizers make sure they don’t have octiNoxate or oxides. Also again you can’t mix your foundation with your sunscreen, because it will interfere with the sunscreen’s filters.

Moisturizers with SPF in them are fine to apply solely as your sunscreen. As long as you are applying the 1/2 teaspoon to your face and neck. However, most moisturizers are not substantive, like regular sunscreens are so they may not adhere to you face and be as protective. Also many moisturizers don’t contain UVA protection either.

Should you use SPF15 or SPF30? This question has been debated by many.
SPF30 is NOT twice as protective as SPF15.

Well, SPF 15 protects you from 93.3% of UVB rays. And SPF30 protects you from 96.7% of UVB rays. So SPF30 is only 4% more protective.

However, SPF30 is recommended by many, because so many people under apply their sunscreen. If you don’t apply the recommended amount of SPF30, there is no way how to tell how much protection you are really getting. So if you apply the recommended amount of SPF15 and under applied SPF30 sunscreen, the SPF15 would be more protective because you applied the recommended amount.

Remember 1/2 teaspoon for the face and neck everyday, rain or shine!

The Secret to Picking Out the Right Sunscreen!

Sunscreen ingredients! It’s the most important part of buying sunscreen! Please read them! Your skin will thank you! And once you figure it out, it will only take you a second!

Now there are Chemical and Physical sunscreens. You have to pick the one that your skin likes the best! Generally the Chemical sunscreens do have higher UVA protection! Remember UVA 8 is good and 19 is great! Well Physical sunscreens only go up to about 8.

On with the fun part.

Many Chemical sunscreens contain:
Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, and Oxybenzone.
Now if the sunscreen contains Avobenzone, make sure that it does NOT contain Octinoxate! It will
destablize the suncreen causing it to degrade faster in the sunlight, meaning less protection for your skin! Think of it like octiNOxate!

Many Physical sunscreens contain:
Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide

Make sure that they have both ingredients!

Also look for high percentages of these active ingredients. The higher they are and the certain combination of the ingredients means a higher UVA protection number!

So a chemical sunscreen with Avobenzone 3%, Homosalate 13%, Octisalates 5%, Octocrylene 2%, Oxybenzone 4% has a very good UVA protection of around 11-13. (by the way it’s Coppertone Water Babies spf 50)

So just look for other sunscreens with about these percentages in it and you got yourself a great sunscreen!

There’s also a website that will calculate all the ingredients in any sunscreen and give a estimation of the UVA number! It is usually off by a number or two, but that’s better than nothing!

Go ahead check it out!

Oh, also once a sunscreen has been opened it will only last for about a year! So all those sunscreens you had in your cabinet since last summer, toss them!

(Money saving tip: Check out your Big Lots store, they have great deals ($2.50 for Ocean Potions and $3.50 for Hawaiian Tropics Baby Faces SPF50) on sunscreens right now!)

Do You Know How to Pick the Right Sunscreen?

Now just because it is Winter/Spring (depending where you at) right now does not mean one should not be wearing sunscreen everyday! That’s right everyday!

Now I know, I know. Everyday? Yes, everyday! I did not start wearing sunscreen everyday until about a year ago! I thought yeah, yeah, blah blah…. I only need sunscreen in the summer. And even in the summer the most I wore on my face was SPF15 because I was a tanner! I mean there were some summers growing up that I lied out almost every single day! Now at least I only tanned with the real sun and didn’t use tanning beds, because they ARE worse. And now I do have a couple sun spots on my face, not a lot, and they pretty much look like freckles, but I know they are from the sun!

I have research a lot and joined beauty forums, where I discovered skin care products that work for my skin. Of course the products make me photosensitive to the sunlight. And since everybody was so
sunscreen obsessed on the boards, I caved. Yes, I did wear sunscreen occasionally when I was outside for long periods of time, but apparently these sunscreens were not stable!

What? Stable? Yes a stable sunscreen last longer on the skin and protects the skin longer than an unstable sunscreen by a couple hours! A stable sunscreen also protects you from both UVA and UVB rays. When I use to pick up sunscreens I just grabbed ones that either had Avobenzone in it or the ones with the Titanium Oxide and Zinc Oxide in it. However there is another ingredient in the Avobenzone sunscreens that can destabilize the sunscreen, which causes it to degrade faster in the sun and be less protective on you!

So yes, you have to look at sunscreen ingredients! It only takes one second to look! First you have to learn about what they mean! It’s pretty easy and you only have to learn the active ingredients. Because the active ingredients tell you how much protection from the UVA rays you are getting. The UVA rays are the rays that causes the aging (wrinkles)! The SPF number protects you from the UVB rays.

An SPF 30 is good for everyday, but you should really put on higher if you are going to be walking around in the sun a lot or at the beach! So remember to look at the ingredients because the UVA protection # is not on the front of the bottle like the SPF.

In the U.S.A. one can now buy UVA protection as high as about 19! This is the new sunscreen that was released last summer, by Neutrogena! The Dry-Touch SPF 55 and 70 with the new Helioplex ingredient! However, a UVA protection of 8 is good for everyday, 19 is great, but 8 is good for everyday going to work days. In Europe one can buy up to about 35 UVA protection! It’s interesting that Europe is so far ahead of the U.S. when it comes to sunscreen. At least the U.S. is finally getting better! Of course I can’t say I was waiting around for the U.S. to get better since I didn’t start wearing it everyday until the Neutrogena sunscreen hit the shelves. I guess I just lucked out!
(I will post more about the importance of UVA protection next time!)
