FDA 4 Star Sunscreen Rating for UVA Rays

So I have talked about how America is getting better with sunscreens and UVA rays before. The FDA has been working on a new regulation that sunscreens will need a 4 star rating to provide good UVA protection.

This star rating system will finally tell us consumers the protection the sunscreen is providing against UVA rays. It is awesome that they are making it easier on people to fine a sunscreen the protects them from UVA rays, because not all do. UVA rays causes wrinkles, tanning, and cancer. We did not know the affects of the UVA rays in the past, we thought that UVB rays were more damaging, which is how the SPF number got put on the sunscreen bottle.

The FDA thought they would have sunscreens out this summer, but unfortunately they have to go through 20,000 comments on the proposed rules. So it looks like the new 4 star rating system will not pop up until next summer.

If you want a good UVA sunscreen now, check out my other post with a list of sunscreens with estimated UVA protection called PPD.

Happy Friday!

Tip my Hat to Sun Tips!

It’s getting warmer out! Springtime is here and summer is near.

Time to have fun in the sun! Baseball games, Amusement Parks, The Beach, Picnic at the Park, The Lake, Vacationing around, and just walking outside on a beautiful sunny summer day.

It’s also time to get out your hats! The sun rays intensify in the summer and the days are longer. Plus hats are just too darn cute! I love all the new fashionable hats out there! And if you think that hats don’t look good on you, well think again, because there really is a hat out there for everyone!

Also I think it takes awhile to get use to seeing yourself in a hat. Many schools ban you from wearing hats, so that may be one reason why we are not use to wearing them. And when we first put them on, we of course laugh and think we look silly. Well, try it anyway. I dare ya! Hats are really cute, even on you!

There are these really cool hats too, with SPF built right into the hat! Make sure to look for the tag that says UPF50! If it doesn’t say UPF50, than it really won’t protect you that much. UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor, which is similar to SPF, it’s just what is used for clothing.

Also make sure the brim is at least 4 inches in order to cover most of your face!

Hats also protect your hair from the sun. All you ladies out there that color your hair, hats are your hair’s best friend. Sun fades color, so keep your hair protected from the sun!
Remember to still wear sunscreen and sunglasses, the sun can reflect up from the sidewalk!

Have fun this Springtime/Summer!

Go Padres!

The Secret to Picking Out the Right Sunscreen!

Sunscreen ingredients! It’s the most important part of buying sunscreen! Please read them! Your skin will thank you! And once you figure it out, it will only take you a second!

Now there are Chemical and Physical sunscreens. You have to pick the one that your skin likes the best! Generally the Chemical sunscreens do have higher UVA protection! Remember UVA 8 is good and 19 is great! Well Physical sunscreens only go up to about 8.

On with the fun part.

Many Chemical sunscreens contain:
Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, and Oxybenzone.
Now if the sunscreen contains Avobenzone, make sure that it does NOT contain Octinoxate! It will
destablize the suncreen causing it to degrade faster in the sunlight, meaning less protection for your skin! Think of it like octiNOxate!

Many Physical sunscreens contain:
Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide

Make sure that they have both ingredients!

Also look for high percentages of these active ingredients. The higher they are and the certain combination of the ingredients means a higher UVA protection number!

So a chemical sunscreen with Avobenzone 3%, Homosalate 13%, Octisalates 5%, Octocrylene 2%, Oxybenzone 4% has a very good UVA protection of around 11-13. (by the way it’s Coppertone Water Babies spf 50)

So just look for other sunscreens with about these percentages in it and you got yourself a great sunscreen!

There’s also a website that will calculate all the ingredients in any sunscreen and give a estimation of the UVA number! It is usually off by a number or two, but that’s better than nothing!

Go ahead check it out!

Oh, also once a sunscreen has been opened it will only last for about a year! So all those sunscreens you had in your cabinet since last summer, toss them!

(Money saving tip: Check out your Big Lots store, they have great deals ($2.50 for Ocean Potions and $3.50 for Hawaiian Tropics Baby Faces SPF50) on sunscreens right now!)
