Fasting has been around for centuries, since the beginning of humans really. Fasting is done for many reasons: religion, diet, body detoxification, and other health reasons.
Now is fasting healthy for dieting. No, fasting is really not healthy to loose weight. The healthiest way to loose weight is too eat a little less and exercise a little more. After you start eating again you will gain the weight back, fasting is mostly from lost fluids. Actually once you start eating again you may gain more weight, because fasting slows down your metabolism. If you are not eating healthy and have liver, kidney, or any other immune problem then fasting can be very dangerous.
Many people are into fasting to detoxify the body in order to flush out all of the toxins. The body already has very advance detoxification systems, which are the liver, lungs, colon, skin, and kidneys. Fasting to detoxify the body has not been scientifically proven to work. Just drinking a lot of water will help to get rid of toxins and you don’t have to stop eating. Eating a well balanced diet helps to keep the body and its automatic detoxification system working efficiently. Although some doctors say that fasting is necessary to get rid of all the toxin buildup, but is still not scientifically proven to work.
Fasting is good for medical reasons, studies are being done that could show to help diabetes, the heart, excema, arthritis, and depression. Also when you go to get an operation and the doctor tells you to not eat anything for 24 hours or whatnot, it is because the body should be relaxed and not working hard to digest food. If fasting works for your medical condition then some doctors say to keep trying it for 1 to 5 days a month, but only if you have a healthy diet before and after the fast. And if you have a healthy diet then you may not need to fast at all for medical reasons. More studies need to be done on fasting and its’ affects on the health.
Overall, I think that eating very healthy and exercising sounds the safest. What do you think?
